Body & Soul – Paperback – Loïc Wacquant – Oxford University Press

An indispensable work, a masterpiece. Vanessa Sander rated it really liked it Jan 12, Mike Yarbrough rated it really liked it Feb 11, Yet for three years he immersed himself among local fighters, amateur and professional. This book is not yet featured on Listopia.

This ethnographic study examines, on the one hand, the role a boxing gym plays in the lives of a number of residents of South Side Chicago, while also examining the mores of pugilism and the dedication required to enter the ring. This is awful writing – pretentious and cliched. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

Definitely an interesting view into the world of boxing through a sociological lens.

It’s a French man who sokl into a boxing gym in a “black ghetto” to do his research. It is packed with fruitful conceptual and theoretical discussions. What’s more, the author takes every opportunity to make himself the subject, particularly when he can reference a compliment paid to him by those who trained him, making this as much of an ego-driven work as a scholarly focus on its subject.

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford. Definitely not for a student audience — very interesting, very intellectual, and very provocative.

Excellent ethnography and probably the best book I ever read about my favorite sport. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. Notebooks of an Apprentice Boxer is perhaps the best yet sociology of the bodyits theorizing is less explicit than is the acuteness of the observations.
